About Us
From The Editor
What do you want to be when you grow up? I don’t know who first asked that question, but I do know I was young enough to dream big. The list has changed constantly, from astronaut, hairdresser, singer – it is endless. The one thing that has stayed the same throughout my life, from a young age is empowerment. Women feeling good about themselves and the concept of beauty has been a continuous changing definition in my mind going through my adolescent years. What actually is beauty?
As I’ve grown up I thought a specific look was beautiful - what everyone deemed normal, right? But growing into a young woman my mind-set and outlook on life have changed, and that is for the better. I now see that beauty is not based on appearance, but how someone is as a person - their attributes, morals and dreams in life, that is my definition of beauty – a beautiful personality makes a beautiful person. Looking around and seeing that everyone looks different which is what make them so unique, no two people are the same.
This was my inspiration for ‘UniqueMiss’. An empowering project showing how uniqueness’s make people beautiful. It was an absolute honour to collaborate with models from Zebedee Management, an amazing advocate for disabled models on this project. I had amazing new experiences, learnt new things and made friends for life. I would love to continue my work with them in the future. Sharing their story is so important. It really saddened me to discover that women with differences aren’t seen in mainstream fashion media enough and this was a change I wanted to make.
From amputees, women born with genetic difference, hidden disabilities, we look into all these worlds. I want to tell their story. I am here to show they are living amongst us and should be spoke about. This is not a project to single them out and segregate them, this is a way of putting them on a platform that they should already be on. It’s for showing that there is already amazing work out there hyping them up which is what they deserve. This project is just another stepping stone in that movement. I want you as the reader to take away from this that everyone is accepted: no stereotypes, no labels, no judgement. You are you, so why not celebrate that?
